Black History-Oprah Winfrey

Posted by: ashleyahn03 on: February 23, 2010

Oprah Winfrey was born in Mississippi to unwed teenage parents in 1954. After a difficult adolescence with her mother, she came under the supervision of her strict father in Ashville . When she turned 18, she won the miss black tennessee beauty pageant. The win led to a part time news position on a black radio station. In 1967, she moved to Baltimore to host a program called ‘People Are Talking’. After 8 years on the show, she was hired by Chicago TV station to do ‘AM Chicago’ which would eventually become ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’. Oprah’s popularity led to a role in the Steven Spielberg film ‘The Color Purple’ for which she earned an Academy Award nomination. By 1986, the Oprah Winfrey Show was syndicated on over 100 channels across the country. A year later, her top rated top show which was owned by her own production company Harpo was bringing in 125 million dollars a year. Belong to her impressive top rated show, what makes Oprah truly unique is the influence she has over her fans. When she started Oprah’s Book Club, just about every title she selected shot to the top of the best-seller list. She would appear on Time magazine’s most influential people list every year from 2004 through 2007. In 1999, the Oprah brand continued to grow as she co-founded oxygen media dedicated to programing for women and introduced O magazine. She became a billionaire and the richest self-made woman in America. The reason why she is respectable is that even though she grew up in hard environment she never despaired but always tried hard to achieve something. She always challenged to something new that other people didn’t. I think these challenges are really valuable cause if there is no challenge there is no development.

The chest on the sea

Posted by: ashleyahn03 on: November 4, 2009

Ace just got ship wrecked and he is now out at sea on a raft alone. There is nothing in sight but never ending waves.  In the distance he sees a dark brown colored object.  As it floats towards him, with every roll of the wave, it appears to look like a plank.  Yet, the closer it gets to him, he notices that it is really a wooden chest.  As his raft drifts closer and closer the object slowly becomes in his reach.  He sticks his hand out into the water and he grabs it. It is not that big and it is lighter than he thought so he can take it out of water easily. It is a dark brown colored chest which is decorated with rusty gold. It looks very old and surface of the chest is very rough. He opens it carefully. There is a map and a compass. He picks up the compass and then the needle of the compass starts spinning. Soon it stops spinning and points somewhere. He can’t see anything because of a dense fog but he decides to follow the compass.

Ace was a pirate. He was making a voyage with his crews to find a treasure. But a few hours ago, his ship met a storm and wrecked. Now he was alone on a raft and he was concerning about his comrades. The sky was still dark and it was very foggy. Soon, something came into his sight. It was an island! Few minutes later, he came safe to land and started to look around the island. It seemed like an uninhabited island. He didn’t know what to do. Suddenly, he reminded the map. He took it out from his pocket. As he expected, It was a map of the island. In addition, it was a treasure map! He started to follow the direction of the map. It took 3 days to get destination. He passed forest and river and finally found the cave which is marked on the map. He discovered a same chest as he found on the sea in the cave. It was filled with gold and jewels. Next day, he moved it to the beach. But still he didn’t know what to do. He was thinking about a way to get out of this island. That time, he saw a ship which is sailing around the island. He stood up and started to shout to the ship.

“Help me! Help me!”

Soon, the ship started to move toward him. When the ship got closer, he saw a familiar face on the ship.

“Ace! we were looking for you.”

It was one of his crews.

“Everyone is alive. We were very concerning about you. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. By the way, do you know what I found? I found a treasure!”

“Really? Let’s talk about it later. Everyone is waiting for you at the nearest port from here.”

Ace met all of his comrades again at the port. He told them about the chest, treasure, and his adventure. He bought a new ship with the treasure and continued a voyage with his crews.

Does costly program boost learning?

This article is about an educational using of computers in school.River Dell Regional School has given a laptop to every freshmen and let them use it until they graduate. But recently, the school is considering whether to continue giving a laptop to every student. They have done it for 2 years, parents and students give it mixed review.

This article was written to reveal different point of views about using of computers in school. Some people oppose to use computer in school and some people agree with it. This article reveals both sides and explain both  good points and bad points of using computer in school. It shows us many examples and makes us think about which side is right.

There are some interesting facts that I learned from this article. First, I’ve never known that there is school which provides computers to every students. I realize that school is no exception from development of technology. Also, it was interesting that students’ grades can be improved by educational use of computer. I feel that results can be always different depend on how we did. Also I learned that using of computers can fosters 21st century skills with students such as critical thinking, collaboration, information literacy.

My life is also related with this article. In school, We use computers in many classes. For example, teachers use power point to give information or explain things during the class. We use computers in art class to find images and sometimes we watch video or pictures which related to class through computers. Also we’re doing variety things with computer in computer technology class. This blog is one of those things. I can contact with teachers through e-mail or I can check my homework on teachers’ blog. Also I use computer almost everyday to do my homework. We’re using computers for educational purpose in our daily life.

If I was in power of this event, I would continue giving every students a laptop. First, it can be helpful for students’ grades. There is study which found that students’ scores improved the more they used computers for educational purposes at home and at school. Next, students can do their work more conveniently. It helps kids get organized, communicate with teachers and learn research skills they will need in the workplace. Finally, students can learn variety things through variety media. Teachers can use powerpoint presentations blending video, audio and spreadsheets. Also students can learn 21st century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, information literacy.

Private College Affordability: How to Make it Happen

Posted by: ashleyahn03 on: November 2, 2009

There are many people who even cannot dream about college because of their financial problem. But where there is a will, there is a way. In any situation, there is available financial aid for everyone. If you visit any and all institutions that spark an interest and ask questions, you may find appropriate financial aid for you. What you have to do is following; First, compare sticker price and actual cost. Also, fill out the FAFSA(The Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Last, determining “need”.

What you have to do first is to compare sticker price and actual cost. First, find out the average financial aid package at the institution you are considering. Then subtract that mount from the stated tuition to cost to figure out actual cost. Every students’ situation will impact what kind of scholarships or grants are offered. It will help you to know how much you can get from the aid and how much you have to pay actually. Now, you need to fill out the form.

Secondly, you have a form to fill out which is called ‘FAFSA’. It means ‘The Free Application for Federal Student AID’. It provides information used by the federal government to determine your family’s expected contribution. That amount will be the same regardless of the college or university you choose and gives schools the data they need to build a financial aid package that best fits your need. This form is very efficient to construct your financial aid so you have to fill it out exactly. And then, let’s figure out something else you have to do.

Lastly,  you should determine your “need”. Need is defined as the difference between the full cost of attendance and the estimated family contribution (EFC). It is determined by the federal government from information families provide on the FAFSA. Federal EFC will be the same at all schools. This is one of the reason why FAFSA is so important. All processes are connected to each other.

Like these, you should know and do many things to get a financial aid. You have to compare sticker price and actual cost  and fill out the FAFSA. Also, you have to what your need and determine it. It could be little complicated, but it’s nothing compare to your college life and your dream. Don’t give up. There is always opportunity. It you try hard you will surely catch it.

I agree with this phrase. Historically there have been many examples for this. Nazi was popular in Germany after World War II, but it was the most horrible political party in history. Also, after industrial revolution, there were some people who fought for democracy, but the society didn’t accept it at the first time. Also, these happen in our society a lot.
